Saturday night dress-up: a GBP 236 SARB035, a Cocktail Time with a mental dial and the cheapest twerp in the box

It's Saturday night, so we dress up. I'm not a dress watch guy and I don't have the clothes to wear them, but I do love them, and I've got exactly three.

So here they all are: the Seiko SARB035, probably the best of the three; the SRPB46 Cocktail Time 'Manhattan'; and the Orient Multi Year Calendar, the cheapest watch in the collection. That's probably the last dress watch you'll ever see on this channel.

The verdict

The SARB035 is probably the best of the three: a mind-boggling combination of case finishing for a ridiculously low price, which Seiko don't do any more. The SRPB46 has the dial, Seiko being the kings of dials at every price point, and the Orient is a cheap watch that's given great pleasure to so many people who aren't rich. Mock it and you reveal your true self.

Bought new for GBP 236 in 2016: one of Seiko's best cases, an ivory-looking dial, dolphin hands sharper than a Shogun sword, and a staggering amount of watch for the money.

A simple, all-polished case but the dial is mental; a genuinely good, soft Seiko strap, which I've turned the right way round, and it's special occasions only for me.
