Rugged, hefty, mushy: the Mohawk with the first misaligned lume pip I've ever seen

Lesser known, lesser loved

It's been a while, and we've got a new one. Nomenclature and taxonomy may be specific to this timepiece, so I'll call it by its proper name: the SRP585K1, the Mohawk. A lesser known and lesser loved Seiko. You don't see them very often. Not one of my favourite watches, but it's a favourite of many other people. This one belongs to my bro Big Chris.

4R36, 21,600 beats per hour, about 240 pounds. ISO certified, 200 metres. A proper dive watch. It can't be taken lightly.

The size and heft

I struggled to find any specs, so I measured it myself with my fantastic calipers. 45 mm across, 51 mm tip to tip, 22 mm lugs tapering to 20 at the clasp. On the Mohawk side, 14.5 mm thick, because the bezel's raised up to around the 20 mark. On the normal side, 13 mm. The purpose of that raised bit is unknown to me, but for many people it's quite lovely. It's a rugged watch. The size and heft are not to be underestimated. A strange piece. Even the Hardlex sticks up slightly over the bezel. It should be recessed. Strange.

On my seven-inch wrist it's a big, hefty piece. Much bigger and much thicker than my SKX, and the same size as my Turtle on its Crafter Blue.

The dreaded X

Here it is: the dreaded X on the dial. It's been done, it can never be undone, and now even the Marinemaster's been destroyed. Harrowing. But the dial is very nice. Everything lines up perfectly. Almost. That 12 o'clock marker's not quite straight, is it? It's okay. Split arrow tip on the minute hand, a plunger with a needle tip on the hour hand. Quite fantastic.

The clasp: stamped metal, like on every Seiko. Get rid of it immediately. Four micro-adjustments, very nice, plus that diver's extension thing that's completely pointless.

Mushy, and the pip

The sticker's still on, so I'm going to defrock it. Excommunicate it from the priesthood. Kristoff gave me permission. It doesn't want to come off, and the caseback says May 2016, so it's not new.

Now the Seiko quality control. That bezel is extremely bad. Mushy. It plays. It's not pleasant to turn, and you don't know where you are with it. A pain. Then look at the lume pip. Misaligned. I've never seen a misaligned lume pip in my life until today. No disrespect to Big Chris, he's my bro, but how easy is that to get right? Lume? Same Lumibrite as my SKX and Turtle. No surprises.

Verdict

It's a great watch. It works perfectly well. Just not my cup of tea. Stay loyal, stay freaky, and never give up. Love you all.
