Seiko SPB317 'Slim Turtle'
8/10
For the beeeech
Not many negatives: a slim, comfortable, workmanlike Turtle that's a better watch in every way than the big one. Buy it used.

Seiko SPB143 62MAS Modern Re-interpretation
9/10
Beyond thunderdome
An almost perfect watch and one of Seiko's finest masterpieces; not worth £1,100 new, but a steal used at £750-850.
The winner: Seiko SPB143 62MAS Modern Re-interpretation
I'd choose both. The 143 is undoubtedly the better finished watch, the 317 is for sure more workmanlike, and both wear unobtrusively. For me personally the 143 wins, but only by one or two percent.
